We have just returned from a long and exhausting weekend. This was our first major trip away with Nicholas, and we can see now that we didn’t fully understand the changes that having our little one with us would bring …
Andrew, one of Tim’s friends from university, married Anne near Kendal in the Lake District, close with where Tim’s sister lives. A long time ago, Andrew asked Tim to be an usher, a role which tim was all too happy to accept! However, this meant that on the day Justine had to look after Nicholas while Tim ran around looking after the wedding.
Before the wedding on the Saturday, however, we had to travel up to the Lake District. We have visited before, taking the train from Euston and arriving around two and a half hours later. However, the amount of clutter needed by a baby meant that driving was the only realistic option! Pip and Tom regularly make the journey in four and a half hours, but we knew that we would need to stop to feed Nicholas from time to time.
We didn’t expect that the journey would take ten and a half hours though! We were stuck in traffic getting out on London, and then torrential rain on the motorway meant that speeds were limited to 60 or even 40 miles per hour. Each time we stopped, nicholas was not in a hurry to feed, and he also seemed to want food more often than normal. We eventually arrived at half past ten on Friday evening.
Luckily the rain stayed in the South, and Anne and Andrew had a marvellous sunny day for their wedding.
Nicholas enjoyed his first wedding although he got a bit hungry during the service and Justine had to step outside to feed him. He was wide awake after dinner, but seemed to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the bagpipes and celidh band!
The trip home took nine and a half hours – we’re getting better! We would have been quicker, but Nicholas decided he wanted to drive.
